A club shaped by a century of golf.
Observatory Golf Club is the oldest golf club in Johannesburg still operating from its original grounds.
Golf started in Observatory over a 9-hole course in 1912 and Observatory Golf Club was officially established in 1914, with the course extended to 18 holes in 1922. We celebrated our 100th anniversary in 2014 and remain the oldest club in Johannesburg still played on its original grounds.
The layout has evolved over the decades. The course is not long by modern standards, but with narrow fairways and smaller greens it remains a true test of intellectual golf — placement and patience reward the thinking player.
The current Committee has invested heavily in the course over recent years: a phased bunker renovation plan, additional fairway irrigation and a series of cosmetic projects. The Clubhouse has also been transformed — a newly renovated Halfway House, an extended function room, and a refreshed bar.
